Maid of Honor: Andrea Marinaro

First off is my bestest friend in the whole wide world and long time travel companion, Andrea Marinaro. I met Andrea in college through our sorority, Chi Omega. One day she came to the room that Heather and I shared looking for Heather. I trapped her there and eventually we became best friends. We've been all over the world together and have LOTS of stories that are at least entertaining to ourselves. Andrea is especially looking forward to the wedding in Italy to go back to her homeland. One area that might be challenging is that her name is a man's name in Italy, so I've already taught her how to say "I am a woman" in Italian.

Un giorno è entrata nella stanza che Heather ed io dividevamo in cerca di Heather. In quell'occasione l'ho imbrogliata e successivamente siamo diventate amiche. Assieme siamo state in giro per il mondo e abbiamo un sacco di storie che ci tengono compagnia. Andrea sta aspettando con ansia il matrimonio in Italia per tornare alla sua terra di origini. Un'area che potrebbe riservare delle sorprese è il suo nome che in Italia è un nome maschile per cui le ho già insegnato come dire "sono una donna" in italiano.

My Rooms: Sarah Kiep

Sarah and I also met in college through Chi-Omega my last year at Iowa. We've lived together for over 5 years in various apartments in Chicago. She has always been the best roommie and friend to hang with at home. Sarah is a loyal and dedicated sports fan. Her favorite teams include the Chicago Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks. But we share a mutual adoration for our beloved Iowa Hawkeyes and have been known to attack a basketball and football player or two!

Anche Sarah ed io ci siamo incontrate al college attraverso l'associazione Chi-Omega durante il mio ultimo anno in Iowa. Abbiamo vissuto assieme per oltre 5 anni in diversi appartamenti a Chicago. E' sempre stata la miglior compagna di stanza e amica con cui accompagnarsi a casa. Sarah è una fedele e accanita fan sportiva. Le sue squadre favorite includono Chicago Cubs, Bears e Blackhawks. Ma nutre un'assoluta adorazione per i nostri amati Iowa Hawkeyes ed è nota per aver aggredito uno o due giocatori di football e basketball.

Heathie for Prez: Heather Link

Heather was my first roommate and friend in Chi-Omega. I think we first bonded on the dance floor at a frat party after I joined the sorority. She has her signature moves and definitely likes to bust a move to good music. Heather, Andrea and I lived together our last semester at Iowa and I remember her studying so much that she fell asleep with all her books in bed with her. She's the busiest and most motivated woman I know. And I'm sure after she's done raising her kids, we'll see her in the White House.

Heather, Andrea ed io abbiamo vissuto assieme il nostro ultimo semestre in Iowa e ancora la ricordo studiare così tanto da cadere addormentata con tutti i libri nel letto con lei. Lei è la più impegnata e motivata donna che conosco. Sono sicura che dopo aver cresciuto i suoi figli, la vedremo alla Casa Bianca.

Italian Wedding Site Pictures!

Ok, I'm finally back home and able to load up some pictures! In this picture, you can see from the entrance of the castle the courtyard. In the middle is the bar and on the left are some tables and chairs to relax in. On the right is "Cupidos" where the dj will be set up and an area of couches for lounging are around. There will also be room for a small dance floor. I almost broke my first rule of wedding planning and had the dj on the other side of the courtyard. But everyone knows that the key to a good party is to have the dance floor as close to the bar as possible!

Ok, sono finalmente tornata a casa ed ho potuto così "uploadare" alcune foto. In questa immagine si puo' vedere il cortile dall'entrata al castello. Nel mezzo c'e' il bar e a sinistra alcuni tavoli e sedie per rilassarsi. A destra c'e' il "Cupido" dove il dj organizzerà un'area di divanetti per distendersi. Ci sarà anche spazio per una piccola pista da ballo. Ho quasi rotto la mia prima regola della pianificazione del matrimonio posizionando il dj dall'atra parte del cortile. Ma tutti sanno che la chiave per una festa ben riuscita è di avere la pista da ballo il più possibile vicina al bar!

If the weather is good (fingers crossed!), it should be a really nice area to have the party after dinner. Lots of places to sit either close to the action or further away. Here's a closer picture of Cupidos. At night, they'll put some cushions on those benches, so it should be comfy! Under the sign is where the DJ will be set up. I'm trying to get his playlist now, but let me know if there are any special requests! You know that there will be at least 5 times the electric slide will be played!

Se il tempo è buono (incrociamo le dita!), dovrebbe essere una zona veramente gradevole per avere la festa dopo la cena. Ci saranno molte zone dove potersi sedere vicino al centro della festa o ad una certa distanza. Questa è un'immagine ravvicinata della zona "Cupido". Alla sera ci saranno dei divanetti con cuscini per cui dovrebbe essere confortevole! La zona dove c'è il cartello è dove si metterà il DJ. Sto cercando di ottenere la playlist, ma fatemi sapere se avete richieste particolari! Lo sapete che ci saranno almeno 5 occasioni per suonare.

From the bar, you face more seating on the first floor and the stairs to the 2nd floor where the restaurant is located. On the top floor is a large veranda with views of the valley and mountains.

Dal bar potrete vedere ulteriori posti a sedere al piano terra e le scale al primo piano dove si trova il ristorante. All'ultimo piano si trova la grande veranda con vista sulla vallata e sulle montagne.

Home again, home again, jiggity jig...

So we head back to Chicago soon with all of our wedding planning completed. It was a very productive 10 days, so now we can relax and wait for the big day. I'll leave the last post from Italy fittingly about the food for the wedding.

The current agenda for the wedding day is as follows:

- 5pm ceremony
- 5:30 - 7pm buffet & drinks
- 7pm - 10pm dinner
- 10pm - 2am drinks and dancing

So the question is...will you be ready to eat for 5 1/2 hours?

For the buffet there will be a variety of foods like prociutto, mozzarella, vegetables and other assorted light appetizers.

For dinner, there will be:

• two first dishes (think risotto, pastas etc.),
• followed by sorbetto (gelato and spumante to cleanse the palate..or just to devour like I do!); and
• the main dish (meat dish)

I don't want to give all the details of the meal and ruin the surprise. But it should be really good! After dinner will be fruit and the wedding cake. Alberto also just reminded me there will be assorted cheeses as well!! Hopefully after all that food, you'll be able to sit back, relax and have a drink or two. Or even better, dance!

If there's one tip about Italy I can give anyone, it's leave your diet at the boarder. There's no room for South Beach in this country so enjoy it! I know I have and will soon need a strict exercise regimen in order to fit into my dress!

A breve torneremo a Chicago con i preparativi del matrimonio completati. Sono stati 10 giorni veramente produttivi, per cui adesso ci possiamo rilassare e aspettare il grande giorno. Completerò l'ultimo post dall'Italia con i piatti del matrimonio.

L'agenda attuale del giorno del matrimonio è la seguente:

- 17:00 cerimonia
- 17:30 - 19:00 buffet & drinks
- 19:00 - 22:00 cena
- 22:00 - 2:00 am drinks e ballo

Per cui la domanda è… siete pronti per mangiare 5 ore e mezza?

Per il buffet ci saranno una varietà di cibi come prosciutto, mozzarella, verdure e altri antipasti assortiti.

Per cena ci sarà:

• due primi piatti (risotto e pasta)
• seguiti da un sorbetto (gelato e spumante per pulire il palato… o più semplicemente da ingurgitare come faccio io!); e
• un secondo piatto (di carne)

Non voglio dare tutti i dettagli della cena e rovinare la sorpresa. Ma dovrebbe essere veramente buono! Dopo cena ci sarà la frutta e la torta nuziale. Alberto mi ha appena ricordato che ci saranno anche dei formaggi assortiti!! Speriamo che dopo tutto questo cibo, sarete in grado di sedervi, rilassarvi, e prendere un paio di drinks. O meglio ancora, ballare!

Se c'è un suggerimento sull'Italia che posso dare, è di lasciare la dieta alla frontiera. Non c'è spazio per South Beach in questa nazione per cui godetevela! Lo so che tra un po' avro' bisogno di seguire uno stretto regime di esercizi fisici per entrare nei miei vestiti!

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Planes

• The closest airport is Verona, which is about 30 minutes by car (or 20 min by train to Vicenza) to Montecchio Maggiore.
• Next closest is Venice which is about an hour by car (or an hour by train to Vicenza).
• Milan is probably the 3rd best option, at about 2 hours by car (2 1/2 - 3 by train to Vicenza)

Trains

• Trains are an inexpensive and easy way to travel between cities in Italy. If you fly from Milan, you can take a train to the central station and then from there take a train headed to Venice and get off at Vicenza. All Milan/Venice trains stop in Vicenza.
• Trenitalia offers an online tool to see train schedules and even book (http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=c79686605528a110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD) Although I would recommend waiting to buy your ticket until at the station.
• Trains run every 30 min or so between Milan and Venice so they are pretty frequent. Be aware that some trains are "local" trains and take longer than the "express" trains. You'll be able to distinguish by looking at the stops on the time table.
• Vicenza is the closest train stop to Montecchio Maggiore. When arriving there you can take a taxi to the hotel for about 15 euros.

Automobiles

• If you are up for the adventure of driving in Italy, double your life insurance and then book a car with Avis or Hertz.
• Be aware that the standard rental car in Italy will be manual transmission (stick shift). So you'll need to make special arrangements/requests to get an automatic transmission.

Aereo

• L'aereo piu' vicino è Verona che è a circa 30 minuti d'auto (o 20 minuti di treno fino a Vicenza) da Montecchio Maggiore.
• Il secondo piu' vicino è Venezia che è circa un'ora d'auto (o un'ora di treno fino a Vicenza).
• Milano è probabilemente la terza opzione a circa 2 ore d'auto (2,5 - 3 di treno fino a Vicenza)

Treno

• I treni sono economici e costituiscono un mezzo per viaggiare facilmente tra varie città in Italia. Se volate da Milano, potete prendere un treno fino alla Stazione Centrale e poi da lì, un treno per Venezia e scendere a Vicenza. Tutti i treni Milano-Venezia di fermano a Vicenza.
• Trenitalia offre un sito web per vedere gli orari dei treni e anche per prenotare (http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=c79686605528a110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD) ma vi suggerirei di comprare il biglietto alla stazione.
• I treni tra Milano e Venezia viaggiano ogni 30 minuti circa per cui sono abbastanza frequenti. Da notare che alcuni treni sono "locali" e richiedono piu' tempo dei treni "espressi". Li potrete distinguere guardando sulle fermate indicate nella tabella orari.
• Vicenza è la fermata dei treni piu' vicina a Montecchio Maggiore. Quando arriverete a Vicenza, potrete prendere un taxi fino all'hotel per circa 15 euro.

Automobile

• Se sei in cerca di avventura e vuoi guidare in Italia, raddoppia la tua assicurazione sulla vita e poi prenota un'auto all'Avis o Hertz.
• Da notare che tipicamente le auto a noleggio in Italia hanno il cambio manuale. Per cui dovrai fare un'esplicita richiesta all'autonoleggio per avere un'auto con cambio automatico.

Flowers and Photos

Yesterday we met with the florist and picked out our table arrangements and colors. It was pretty painless and I'm looking forward to see how they turn out.

The meeting with the photographer was good too. He had this tiny studio where we could see some of his recent pictures. I'm not so into the posey posey style of photos for weddings, so we're going with a photojournalist for the event. The pictures are really nice and tell more of a story of the entire day. He'll be taking about 1000 - 1200 pictures throughout the night, so there are bound to be some good pics. If you want to check out this site it is:

Ieri abbiamo visitato il fiorista e scelto gli ornamenti dei tavoli e i colori. E' stato gradevole e piuttosto semplice e sono curiosa di vedere come risulterà.

Anche l'incontro col fotografo è andato bene. Ha un piccolo studio dove abbiamo visionato alcune delle sue recenti fotografie. Poiché lo stile "in posa" non mi piace molto, per l'evento abbiamo scelto lo stile "fotogiornalismo". Le immagini sono veramente belle sono organizzate in modo da raccontare la storia dell'intero evento. Shuttle Information

Another day, another task completed. We've arranged the shuttle details and will be providing transportation from the Hotel & Residence Castelli to Juliet's Castle the afternoon of the wedding. There will be two pick-ups prior to the wedding:

1. 3:15pm pickup - arrive 3:45pm
2. 4:15pm pickup - arrive 5pm

The ceremony will start at 5pm, so either shuttle should suffice. For the return trip, there will be 3 options to return to Hotel Castelli:

1. 12am pickup - arrive 12:30am
2. 1am pickup - arrive 1:30am
3. 2am pickup - arrive 2:30am

The entire event will run from 5pm to 2am, including ceremony, dinner and drinks/dancing. Get excited!

Altro giorno, altra attività completata. Oggi abbiamo organizzato i dettagli della navetta per il trasporto dall'Hotel & Residence Castelli fino al Castello di Giulietta il giorno della cerimonia. Ci saranno due corse il pomeriggio prima della cerimonia:

1. Partenza 15:15 - Arrivo 15:45
   
2. Partenza 16:15 - Arrivo 16:45
   

La cerimonia inizierà alle 17:00 per cui qualunque delle due corse sarà sufficiente. Per il ritorno all'Hotel Castelli ci saranno 3 invece corse:

1. Partenza 24:00 - Arrivo 00:30
   
2. Partenza 1:00 - Arrivo 1:30
   
3. Partenza 2:00 - Arrivo 2:30
   

L'intero evento durerà dalle 17:00 alle 2:00 am, inclusa la cerimonia e i festeggiamenti a seguire. Preparatevi!

Italy Hotel Information for Wedding

Yesterday we had another busy day with pre-wedding activities. We checked out all the hotels on the list, saw their rooms and checked for "special" pricing.

As some of you may know, we are planning on having a shuttle bus run from one of the hotels to the wedding site before and after the event. This way you don't have to worry about finding the castle, you can enjoy yourself to your heart's content and not worry about the drive back down the mountain!

So, after viewing the hotels, rooms and rates we have decided to recommend the Hotel Castelli and Residence Castelli in Montecchio Maggiore. See links on right -->

The hotel is a 4 star hotel, but keep in mind that the rooms are european style. They are clean and provide the necessities. There is a hotel bar and pool, in terms of amenities. In the hotel there are 2 types of rooms.

1. "Regular Room" - The first is 57 euros per night per room and is the older part of the hotel. They are a tad bit smaller than the newer rooms and if you like the color baby blue, you'll be in heaven.
   
2. "Executive Room" - For 62 euros per night per room, you can stay in the newer part of the hotel. Slightly bigger and with calmer neutral shades, I'm sure you'll be comfortable for your night.
   

Each room fits 2 and if you want an extra bed there is a cost of 20 euros to fit 3. All rates include breakfast.

There are also the Residences which have proper rooms and kitchens and can fit up to 3 for about 75 euros per night.

The hotel said that there will be a convention in September in nearby Vicenza, so I would recommend everyone book their rooms as soon as you can. You can either call or email the hotel to book. Just mention that you are attending the wedding of Kim and Alberto at Juliet's Castle and you will get the special rates!

Ieri abbiamo avuto un altro giorno impegnativo con le attività di prematrimoniali. Abbiamo controllato tutti gli hotel nella lista, visto le camere e verificato per prezzi "speciali".

Come alcuni di voi possono già sapere, stiamo prevedendo di avere un bus navetta da uno degli hotel fino al luogo della cerimonia prima e dopo l'evento. In questo modo non vi dovete preoccupare di trovare il castello, vi potrete godere la serata senza preoccuparvi di guidare giu' per la montagna!

Quindi, dopo aver visitato gli hotel, le stanze e le tariffe, abbiamo deciso di raccomandare l'Hotel Castelli e Residence Castelli a Montecchio Maggiore. Vedi link a destra -->

L'hotel è un 4 stelle, ma tenete presente che le stanze sono in stile europeo. Sono pulite e forniscono tutto il necessario. In termini di amenità, l'hotel mette a disposizione bar e piscina. L'hotel offre due tipi di stanze:

1. "Stanze Regular" - Costa 57 euro per notte per stanza e si trova nella parte piu' vecchia dell'hotel. Sono leggermente piu' piccole delle stanze piu' nuove e se vi piace il colore baby blu starete una favola.
   
2. "Stanze Executive" - Per 62 euro per notte per stanza, potrete alloggiare nella parte nuova dell'hotel. Le stanze sono leggermente piu' grandi e con colori neutrali, sono sicura trascorrerete una notte confortevole.

C'e' anche il Residence che offre camere con cucina e che può ospitare fino a 3 persone per 75 euro a notte.

L'hotel ci ha detto che in settembre in zona a Vicenza c'e' una convention, per cui consiglio di prenotare le stanze il prima possibile. Per prenotare è sufficiente chiamare o inviare un'email all'hotel. Ricordatevi però di dire che parteciperete al matrimonio di Kim e Alberto al Castello di Giulietta e avrete così diritto alla tariffa speciale.

Bomboniere

Hi, we're in Italy now and doing the last details of the wedding planning. Yesterday we made an attempt to finalize the photographer, but to no avail. Unfortunately he wasn't at his studio, so we'll have to go back later this week to sort that out. But we did pick out our bomboniere with the help of Alberto's mom.

For my American friends, and perhaps others, we have no concept of bomboniere but they are all the rage here in Italy. At first I thought they were the little almonds that everyone gets at the wedding, but it turned out to be much more. Essentially, each family or person who attends the wedding gets a gift from the bride and groom. So, if there wasn't enough incentive to come to our wedding....hopefully now there is! You get a gift!

Today we're going to the castle for a tasting. Alberto's parents have already tried the food and liked it, so I'm looking forward to it. After that, all we have left to do is flowers, dj, cake, bus and check out the hotels. Luckily we still have over a week here! Stay tuned for more information as we get things sorted.

Ciao, adesso siamo in Italia e ci stiamo occupando degli ultimi dettagli dell'organizzazione del matriomonio. Ieri abbiamo fatto un tentativo per ingaggiare il fotografo, ma non era disponibile. Sfortunatamente non era nel suo studio per cui dovremo tornare alla fine della settimana per completare questa attivita'. Ma abbiamo scelto le bomboniere con l'aiuto della mamma di Alberto.

Per i miei amici americani, e forse anche per altri, noi non abbiamo il concetto di bomboniere, ma in Italia sono molto popolari. All'inizio pensavo fossero i confetti che si ricevono ai matrimoni, ma si sono rivelate essere molto di più. Essenzialmente ogni famiglia o persona che partecipa alla cerimonia del matrimonio riceve un regalo dagli sposi. Per cui se non prima non avevate abbastanza incentivi per venire al nostro matrimonio… speriamo che adesso li abbiate! Avrete un regalo!

Oggi andremo al castello per un assaggio. I genitori di Alberto hanno già provato la cucina e gli è piaciuta per cui sto aspettando con impazienza. Dopo di ciò, tutto ciò che ci rimane da sistemare sono: fiori, dj, torta, bus e verifica degli hotel. Fortunatamente abbiamo ancora più di una settimana qui!
